OTL: NCAA investigating Manziel for potentially profiting from autographs

The life and times of Johnny Manziel

COLLEGE STATION ? The complicated life of Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, just got quite a bit more complex.

The NCAA is investigating Manziel on whether he was ?paid for signing hundreds of autographs on photos and sports memorabilia in January,? ESPN?s Outside the Lines has reported.

According to an online ESPN.com story: ?Two sources tell ?Outside the Lines? that the Texas A&M quarterback agreed to sign memorabilia in exchange for a five-figure flat fee during his trip to Miami for the BCS National Championship Game. Both sources said they witnessed the signing, though neither saw the actual exchange of money.?

An A&M official couldn?t be reached for comment this afternoon. The Aggies reported for camp today and are scheduled to hold a press conference ? Manziel is supposed to participate ? starting 11:30 a.m. Monday. They take the field for the first time under second-year coach Kevin Sumlin on Monday evening.

Abstract (provisional)

Background

We assessed the effectiveness of an integrated individual, community, and structural intervention to reduce risks of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female sex workers (FSWs).

Methods

Integrated individual, community, and structural interventions were implemented from 2004 to 2009 in six counties of Shandong Province. Post-intervention cross-sectional surveys were conducted in six intervention counties and 10 control counties.

Results

Of 3326 female sex workers were recruited and analyzed in the post-intervention survey with 1157 from intervention sites and 2169 from control sites. No HIV positive was found in both intervention and control counties. The rate of syphilis was 0.17% for intervention sites and 1.89% for control sites (OR = 11.1, 95%CI: 2.7, 46.1). After adjusted for age, marital status, education, economic condition, recruitment venues, the rates of condom use in the last sex with clients(AOR = 2.7; 95%CI:1.9, 3.8), with regular sex partners(AOR = 1.5; 95%CI:1.1, 1.9) and consistent condom use in the last month with clients (AOR = 3.3; 95%CI: 2.6, 4.1) and regular sex partners (AOR = 1.7; 95%CI: 1.3, 2.3) were significantly higher in intervention sites than that in control sites. The proportion of participants correctly answered at least six out of eight HIV-related questions (83.3%) in intervention sites is significant higher than that (21.9%) in control sites (AOR = 24.7; 95%CI:2.5, 42.7), the five indicators related to HIV-related intervention services ever received in the last year including HIV testing(AOR = 4.9; 95%CI: 2.8, 6.7), STD examination and/or treatment(AOR = 5.1; 95%CI:4.2, 6.4), free condom(AOR = 20.3; 95%CI:14.3, 28.9), peer education(AOR = 4.3; 95%CI:3.5, 5.4), education materials(AOR = 19.8; 95%CI:13.1, 29.8) were significantly higher in intervention sites than that in control sites, the participants in the intervention sites are more likely to seek medical treatment when they had any disorders (AOR = 3.2; 95%CI:2.5, 4.2).

Conclusion

This study found that the integrated individual, community, and structural interventions showed positive impact in reducing HIV and STI risks among FSWs.

HS State Baseball: Van Buren Stuns Don Bosco

DES MOINES, Iowa - Victory was almost near for the Don Bosco baseball team on Saturday in the state tournament.

The Dons had a 5-2 lead over Van Buren going into the bottom of the seventh inning. All they needed was three outs to advance, but Van Buren had other plans scoring five runs to tie the game.

It went into extras. In the bottom of the eighth, Van Buren had the bases loaded. Robert Barker ended up getting hit by a pitch, the winning run would score and the Warriors would shock the Dons winning 6-5 in eight innings.

Union Boss Makes Case Against Arming Teachers: ?If I Make My Teacher Angry, Is My Teacher Going to Shoot Me??

New Jersey American Federation of Teachers president Donna Chiera, when asked Thursday on NBC's "Today" about how arming teachers in the classroom might impact students, had this to say:

"I would hate for students to say, 'Oh, my goodness, if I answer the wrong question, is my teacher going to shoot me? If I make my teacher angry, is my teacher going to shoot me?'"

Newsbusters reports that guest host Carson Daly followed up thusly: "Do you think they would they make that connection?" (And check out news reader Natalie Morales' facial expression directed toward Chiera at this point):

Chiera didn't back down; she went further:

"Because of the media and everything they've been exposed to, where people on a regular basis they see on TV, someone got mad and pulled out a gun. I also think it impacts parents. Parents many times come into classrooms to have uncomfortable conversations with teachers. And I wouldn't want parents to come in and be hesitant to say something to me with, 'Is this the teacher who's packing the gun, and what do I have to be fearful?' I think it would make an environment of fear."

Video: Inside This Week's Cover Story

To Ken Feinberg, if you lose both your legs, you're as good as dead.

Here, in the world of the living, inspirational media stories after the Boston Marathon bombings featured survivors who persevered, grittily relearning to walk atop state-of-the-art prosthetic limbs, fighting for normalcy with each new step. But in Feinberg's world, it made no difference whether a person could still live a rewarding life or never left the race's finish line. That didn't enter the equation?his?equation. His choice. His rules. Whether you died at the scene or you lost both your legs, you received the same amount of money?$2.2 million?from the victim fund established in the wake of the attack. If you lost one limb, you received considerably less. If you were hospitalized but kept your limbs, then still less.

Feinberg is the nearly ubiquitous expert who has been called in to divvy up funds for the fallen and the injured in a stomach-churning sequence of tragedies, from the Sept. 11 attacks to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, from the Virginia Tech shootings to the Boston bombings. He's Death's accountant. When the stands collapsed at the Indiana State Fair in 2011, killing seven, they called Ken Feinberg. When a gunman murdered 27 children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, they called Ken Feinberg. His is the grimmest of specialties.

In this week's National Journal cover story, James Oliphant discusses "Death's accountant." In the video above, go behind the story with James Oliphant.

Facebook closes above IPO price

Daniel Acker / Bloomberg

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook stock closed above its initial offering price on Friday for the first time since the company's IPO, at $38.05, and it was continuing to climb in after hours trading.

The Menlo Park social network's stock (NASDAQ: FB) has risen 50 percent since a stronger than expected second quarter earnings report on July 24, with the growth in mobile advertising revenue particularly impressive.

The all time high for Facebook was $45 per share on May 18, 2012, the day of its IPO, after which prices quickly dropped, hitting as low as $17 per share on Sept. 4 of that year.

Google Calendar for Android gets crossdevice notification sync

The simplest updates are sometimes the best. See the latest update to Google Calendar for Android as an example: the release adds notification syncing between Android devices, saving the trouble of clearing multiple alerts while hopping from tablet to phone and back. That's the only major addition, but it could represent a big time saver for anyone with a busy schedule. If you're in that camp, you can grab the new Calendar now through Google Play.

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro to be sentenced

Ariel Castro, who pleaded guilty last week to kidnapping, raping and beating three Cleveland women, will find out his fate Thursday at a sentencing hearing, though it?s no mystery where he?ll spend the rest of his life.

The bigger mystery is who will speak at the hearing.

Among those who could address Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge Michael Russo ? and Castro ? are the three victims: Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight or their appointed representatives. The women also could choose to make written or video-recorded statements. It also is possible that the court will not hear from the women at all.

The three, for the most part, have maintained a low profile since May 6, when Berry escaped the home with her 6-year-old daughter and called for police. In July, the women released a YouTube video to thank the community.

Berry also surprised a crowd last weekend, when she walked onstage during a Cleveland concert and was greeted by cheering fans. She later returned to the stage at the invitation of rapper Nelly.

Castro also will have a chance to speak on his behalf and possibly shed light on the dark secrets he had at his Seymour Avenue home in Cleveland during the 10 years he held the women captive.

The former bus driver kidnapped the women from the streets of Cleveland's west side, then held them captive in his home, court records state. During their captivity, he raped and beat the women, chained them in his basement, and allowed them outside only a few times, the records show.

DNA analysis also shows that Castro fathered Berry's 6-year-old daughter, and prosecutors say he impregnated Knight and then beat her to force a miscarriage. It was that act that resulted in the aggravated murder charge and a possible death penalty.

Castro agreed last Friday to a plea bargain to avoid a death sentence. He also pleaded guilty to 937 charges, including aggravated murder, rape and kidnapping. The deal stipulates that he will receive life in prison without parole, plus an additional 1,000 years.

After the last Friday's hearing, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty described Castro as a manipulator without remorse who would not leave prison ?except nailed in a box or in an ash can.?

McGinty is expected to call at least one expert to testify about the three women?s mental state during captivity, said Joe Frolik, a spokesman for McGinty. The expert will specifically discuss the Stockholm syndrome, a mental condition sometimes seen in kidnapping victims in which they begin to feel sympathy and even appreciation for their captor.

The prosecutor?s witnesses ?are going to talk about the impact [Castro] had on these women,? Frolik said.

Frolik, though, would not identify the prosecution witnesses who will be called, other than to say a nationally recognized expert on Stockholm syndrome would take the stand.

?We?re still formulating our game plan,? Frolik said.

The plea bargain hearing last Friday lasted several hours, but Judge Russo has issued a statement that Thursday's sentencing hearing will begin at 9 a.m. ET and conclude by 1 p.m.

St Kilda News ? ? 5 Common Misconceptions About Exercise, Diet ...

Written by 3811 ? // 01/08/2013 ? // Comments Off

on-the-scales

By Ben Longley

The world of health & fitness is riddled with an overload of information, misinformation and all sorts of contradictory advice. Everywhere we go and everywhere we look we are bombarded by TV ads, radio ads, books and magazines who are all touting a different training method or diet which is the magic bullet that everyone is looking for.? Needless to say, most people just get confused and end up getting nowhere with their health and fitness goals. Here are 5 common misconceptions about exercise & diet:

?

Weighing yourself on the scales is the best measurement of results

When most people start a fitness routine or a diet, easily the most commons way of measuring progress is their weight on the scales. The problem is scale weight does not only measure variations in body fat, but also variations in muscle tissue, levels of hydration, water retention, food in your body, etc ? which can all vary.

It?s possible to put on weight and for this to be a productive thing, if you?ve added some lean muscle tissue for example. It?s also possible to lose weight and for this to be counter-productive, if you?ve lost only muscle tissue and no body fat for example. You can chop off your arm and you?ll weigh less on the scales if that?s all you want to see!

Scales don?t actually account for what that weight is actually composed of, which is referred to as your body composition. If you? re training smart and including some strength training exercises into your exercise routine, unless you have a good 10-15 kgs to lose, measuring your weight on the scales likely won?t give you a great indication of results.

?

If females train with weights they will get big & bulky

This misconception is becoming less and less prominent it seems, as time goes on. The vast majority of females will not get big & bulky muscles from weight training. Females lack the physiological profile necessary to add an appreciable amount of muscle tissue. Sure there are the genetic minorities of females who can put on more muscle than most, but I bet you?re not one of them if you?re reading this.

In reality, weight training for females will burn a lot of calories, will give a metabolic boost, will burn body fat more effectively than cardio, will ?tone? muscles, and will help re-shape the body for the better.

?

You have to eat 6 small meals per day to lose weight

This is a very common misconception among regular people and for many personal trainers as well. The idea that you must eat every 2 hours to keep your metabolism running high is a fallacy. Studies have shown that regardless of whether you eat 2 meals per day or 6 meals per day, weight loss will be exactly the same as long as calories intake is the same. So eat anywhere from 3 -6 meals per day, whichever suits you best. If you eat under 3 meals per day, in my opinion it becomes a struggle to eat enough food and get in enough important nutrients for many people.

?

Protein shakes make you fat

There is nothing inherently fattening about a protein shake containing just pure protein and no added carbohydrates. Protein is just a macronutrient and you can get the same amount of protein through eating a lamb chop or a chicken breast. In fact there isn?t even a difference between protein powder for men and protein powder for women, again its just protein and a putting it in a pink tub with a picture of a lean female or a black tub with a picture of a muscly man doesn?t change that.

Protein powder is really just a tool of convenience for most people. If you struggle to eat a real, wholefood source of food to get in your protein, then supplementing with a good quality protein shake can be very helpful for muscle recovery, increasing lean muscle tissue, adhering to a fat loss diet plan and improving body composition.

?

Quick transformations are normal and expected

TV and magazines are filled with examples of quick & amazing transformations, this is the stuff that sells and it?s the stuff that inspires people.? This misconception (whilst it can be inspiring) can actually have quite a negative effect on many people.

In reality, big changes in body composition take time. It?s a slow and steady process which occurs over the span of months and even years (depending on the starting point and the desired finish point), not over the span of 12 weeks. Sure you can get steady results starting from week 1, even really good results -but the 12 week amazing transformations we have all seen are the exceptionally good ones, not the norm.

Thinking quick transformations are normal or are even possible for most people, just lead to disappointment when the realisation kicks in that this is not how it?s going to work for them and the quick-fix solution they had in mind will take a lot longer then expected. More often than not this leads to quitting and failure.

People need to understand that what you look like and how healthy you are will be a by-product of the lifestyle you have lead for a substantial amount of time, not the by-product of an 8 week health kick to ?undo? the damage done from months or years of unhealthy eating and inactivity. By understanding this, people are much more likely to get into the right mindset and get better, long term, sustainable results.

Dance Fire Map 2013: California Wildfire Spreads Near Orleans

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) ? The Dance Fire Map 2013 spread Wednesday as the California wildfire prompted Orleans, CA evacuations. The Dance Fire is located near Camp Creek Road and is causing evacuations of some town residents near Highway 96.

The latest news update on the Dance Fire Map 2013 was indicated today July 31, 2013. The fire remains near Orleans, CA, reports Incident Commander Duane Franklin. The fire is being battled by roughly five hundred personnel but is still at only twenty-five percent containment. The fire had reached six hundred fifty acres overnight. But officials believe that they might reach full containment by noon today.

The fire which started Monday afternoon is prompting some traffic. Last night officials told news that ?Traffic restored to Highway 96. NorCal Team 2 assumed command of the fire at 6:00 p.m. tonight.? They added that ?Evacuation order for portions of Orleans will be lifted this evening or early tomorrow at the latest.? Evacuees were being sent to Junction Elementary School, 98821 California 96, Somes Bar. But officials indicated that some resident in and near Orleans were under evacuation orders. Meantime the Karuk Tribe?s evacuation center was set up on Highway 96?s Department of Natural Resources offices.

The fire was being advanced by 96 degree temperatures, humidity levels near eighteen percent and winds blowing southeast at 9 mph. Officials remained concerned about ?Fire mostly smoldering and creeping. No major runs today. Vast majority of acreage was during the first operational period.? For the latest fire map click HERE.

German consumer confidence heads higher

BERLIN (AP) ? A survey has found that German consumer confidence is continuing to rise on the back of a strong labor market and the prospect of more robust economic growth.

The GfK research institute said Tuesday that its forward-looking consumer climate index rose to 7 points for August from 6.8 in July. That's the highest level since September 2007.

GfK said "the continued stability of employment prospects and a moderate rate of inflation caused optimism to rise."

Recent economic data have bolstered expectations that the German economy, Europe's biggest, is on track to rebound from a lackluster performance over the winter.

Germany's unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in June, which contrasts sharply with other countries that use the euro, such as Greece and Spain, where the jobless rate is over 25 percent.
