Adrift at Sea ? Some Advice For Ellie

Good relationships don?t just happen. They take time, patience, and two people willing to face any obstacle thrown their way.

It doesn?t matter whether the relationship is a friendship or something more?all relationships are hard work and require both people to be committed to working at the relationship. I?ve tried to tell her this so many times before.

I am committed to her and I thought she was committed to me at one point, before her addictions took over your life. If she wasn?t committed to me, why did she talk about adoring Asians with freckles and having children with me? Why did we spend a week talking about marriage, having children and starting a life together?

She should know how committed I am to the women I love?if not from what I have been through with her this past year, then with what I went through with Gee 11 years ago. She should be smart enough to know what that kind of commitment is worth and how rare it is.

I don?t think she will be able to invest the work and make the commitment it takes to really love someone until she starts to love herself enough to want to be more than the drug-addicted alcoholic that she has been for much of the last year. Until she puts herself ahead of alcohol and drugs, there is no chance that she will be able to love anyone or truly accept love from anyone?no matter how much they love her.

The most beautiful people I know are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen!

I think that Ellie still has to go through this process to realize how beautiful she really is capable of being. She is not yet there, since she has not yet found her way out of the depths her addictions have taken her to. She still has much of her struggles, suffering, loss and defeats still ahead of her. I really do not know if she will make it.

Lies usually don?t end relationships. The truth usually does.

This is usually true when one person starts lying. All she has done since I confronted her about her drinking on June 29th is lie. But somehow, she has never lied to me directly.

I have never lied to her. I have only told her the truth about her illness?something that her family and friends won?t tell her.

Her father and brother are both alcoholics in denial and her mother and sister are terrified of her father?so no one is willing to tell her the truth but me. Most of her friends are part of her problem?they are the ones drinking and doing drugs with her.

Unless Ellie can finally face the truth?her fear of the truth is what will end the relationship we have had for most of her life. I have known her since she was born, and I have been her friend, her protector, her confidante and biggest supporter for most of her life. I have loved her, cared for her and protected her all of her life. She has been a part of my family all of her life?until she chose to leave.

It?s your road and yours alone? Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.

Some roads are much more difficult to walk than others?and the road to recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction is a very tough one. I?ve volunteered to accompany her on her long road to recovery, but she has to tell me that she wants me there with them. I know the road to recovery will be long and difficult and fraught with dangers she can?t imagine. As I have said before so many times, she does not need to walk that road alone.

If she just asks me to, I will walk the long road to recovery with her. I will catch her when she stumbles, pick her up when she falls, guide her when she is lost or confused, protect her when she is scared or feels threatened, give her strength when she feels like she can?t go on, and above all else, love her always.

Letting go doesn?t mean we don?t care. Letting go doesn?t mean we shut down. Letting go means we stop trying to force outcomes and make people behave. It means we give up resistance to the way things are, for the moment. It mean we stop trying to do the impossible?controlling that which we can not and instead, focus on what is possible which usually means taking care of ourselves. And we dot his in gentleness, kindness and love, as much as possible.

At some point I have learned that some people will remain in my heart forever, but not in my life. I think that Ellie is one of these people?as much I wish it was otherwise. The only thing harder than letting her go is moving on. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

I have known Ellie all her life?I have seen the worst that she is capable of, and in spite of it all, I still love her for being herself. I have trusted her with my secrets and dreams, and she has trusted me to keep her secrets and dreams. I do not think she is perfect, but I think she is perfect for me and I love Ellie perfectly.

I know Ellie loves me. I know she cares for me. I know she probably regrets the things her addictions and her father have made her do and say this summer. I know she has a lot to learn about herself and will need time and space to fully realize who she is. I am willing to give her the time and space she will need. I have always been there for her, and still am, in spite of all she has done this year.

This is all I can offer Ellie?to be the one who wipes her tears and holds her when she cries, listens to her doubts and reassures her, to always be there for her for better or worse, to cherish her and adore her, to love her more each and every day, and to love her always.

I am not perfect, I am not wealthy, and many people would think I am too old for Ellie, but I am completely and utterly devoted to her and love her and care for her like no other. Ellie has known me all her life. She should know from the 20 years that she has known me that I keep my commitments. I hope she knows I love her and am committed to her, as I have proven this past year. If that isn?t enough, then nothing ever will be.

I did not make the commitment I have to her lightly, and as I promised Ellie and her mother, I will be here for her. But, I can not help her until she begins to help herself. I am here?waiting for her to ask me for my help?but she must make her amends before I can help her.

If she makes her amends, shows me that she wants me back in her life and is committed to keeping me there and asks for my help?I will help her?as I have promised Ellie and her mother.

All endings are also beginnings, even if we don?t know it at the time.

I hope this is true.

I hope the door that opens now that it seems like the door with Ellie is closing is one with something worth all the pain and sorrow I have been through with Ellie.

I pray that she finally realizes that she is ill and seeks help. I hope that she returns to being who God meant her to be. I will continue to pray for my beautiful Irish rose Ellie, as I have been doing for most of the past year.

May God watch over my beloved Ellie. God bless her and protect her, even from herself. May God grant her the strength, courage, and will to fight her illness and return to being her true self. May God grant her the wisdom to see the truth?both about her illness and about us.

Be safe, get well, and most of all, try to remember how much I truly love you, Ellie.

Adam Yauch's Journey From Cancer Diagnosis To Rock Hall

Beastie Boys rapper kept his fans in the loop over the past three years since he was diagnosed.

Adam Yauch, one of the founding members of the pioneering hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, died Friday (May 4) at the age of 47 following a long battle with throat cancer. Yauch's death has rattled the music world to its core, with tributes already pouring in from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Russell Simmons to fellow hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC.

Since his 2009 cancer diagnosis, Yauch has stayed away from the public eye, often communicating with concerned fans through email, but during a period of remission, the Grammy-winning rapper stepped forward with his bandmates to release what would be his final album with the Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and even won an MTV Video Music Award for his direction of the Beasties' "Make Some Noise" video.

Though he fought his battle with cancer privately, Yauch, a practicing Buddhist, always maintained a tight connection with the Beasties' fans and continued to work despite the difficult surgeries and treatments he faced. Below, we've taken a look back at the last few years of Yauch's life to showcase the one-of-a-kind music legend's perseverance in the face of such a difficult battle.

Remembering Adam Yauch with Beastie Boys' Essential Hits

July 20, 2009: Yauch announced in a video posted to BeastieBoys.com that he'd been diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat. "The reason we're here talking is because I have some pretty heavy news to say," Yauch said in the video. "About two months ago, I started feeling this little lump in my throat, like what you would feel if you have swollen glands or something like that, and so I didn't really think it was anything. ... They did tests, and I actually have a form of cancer in the gland that's over here, in the parotid gland, and it's also in the lymph node right in that area."

Yauch had surgery to remove the tumor and began radiation that same week. Due to his treatment, the Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their summer touring plans, including headlining gigs at the All Points West Festival and Lollapalooza, in addition to delaying the release of their album Hot Sauce Committee: Part One. The album was finally released in May 2011 under the title Hot Sauce Committee Part Two with a slightly altered track list.

August 5, 2009: In an email to subscribers of the Beastie Boys' newsletter with the subject line "What I did over my summer vacation," Yauch provided fans with an update on his treatment, writing, "So I'm about a week-and-a-half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. ... My neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better every day. Had the stitches out this past Monday ... so things are moving along."

October 7, 2009: In another email to fans, Yauch wrote about his trip to Dharamsala, India, where he had traveled to see some Tibetan doctors and ended up attending a three-day seminar taught by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. "I'm feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that I've beaten this thing, but of course time will tell," Yauch said in the letter.

March 9, 2010: Yauch attended the Independent Spirit Awards and told reporters that while his recovery had been difficult, he was ready to get back to work. "I feel better. It was touch-and-go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back," Yauch said. "It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor's orders. We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to, but we have to play it by ear."

September 28, 2010: The Beastie Boys receive their first nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

January 21, 2011: "Fight for Your Right Revisited," a short film directed by Yauch that picks up immediately after the events of the Beastie Boys' classic "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" video, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In the film, Elijah Wood plays Ad-Rock, Seth Rogen portrays Mike D and Danny McBride slips on Yauch's classic leather jacket to become MCA. "Revisited" begins with the Beasties crawling out of the trashed apartment while the original '87 tune plays in the background. They head down the stairs and immediately run into the parents of the kids whose party they crashed, played by Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci.

April 20, 2011: The video for "Make Some Noise," the lead single from the Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, debuted, marking the band's first new musical release since Yauch's cancer diagnosis. The clip was cut from Yauch's "Fight for your Right Revisited" short film.

May 3, 2011: Hot Sauce Committee Part Two hits stores nearly two years after the initial planned release of the project. It's still unclear which songs from the unreleased Part One made it onto the sequel. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard albums chart.

July 20, 2011: "Make Some Noise" scores MTV Video Music Award nominations for Video of the Year and Best Direction for Yauch. The nominations brought the Beastie Boys' career total VMA noms to eight, which include a Video of the Year nod for the Beasties' 1994 Spike Jonze-directed classic "Sabotage."

August 28, 2011: Yauch wins the VMA for Best Direction for "Make Some Noise." The win is the third for the group, which previously scored a 1999 VMA for Best Hip-Hop Video for "Intergalactic" and the Video Vanguard Award in 1998.

December 17, 2011: It is announced that the Beastie Boys will officially be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

April 14, 2012: The Beastie Boys become the third hip-hop act inducted into the Rock Hall during a ceremony at the Cleveland, Ohio, museum. Though he was unable to attend the ceremony because he was receiving treatment for a recurrence of his cancer, his bandmates paid him a warm tribute and read a letter written by Yauch to the crowd. Fellow inductees the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their performance at the ceremony to Yauch.

Ian Somerhalder Named United Nations Ambassador for World Environment Day


Ian Somerhalder might take on the role of Christian Grey in the movie adaption of 50 Shades of Grey.

But he's definitely been named United Nations Ambassador for World Environment Day, an event led last year by Gisele Bundchen and Don Cheadle, who teamed up to encourage folks around the world to mobilize their efforts, register their activities and set a record for clean-up efforts.

"We're all working together," Somerhalder says in the following video, joking that he "couldn't decide between Team Don and Team Gisele," so now he can assist both while promoting a great cause.

We're not even talking about the sharp decrease in net income -- the $350 million made in the last quarter was thanks in large part to a one-time tax benefit. What's more, churn had increased from Q4 and, despite signing up 165,000 new accounts, the VoIP carrier managed lose 19,000 subscribers -- and that's after dropping 14,000 last quarter. Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop goes on sale in the US for $1,900

Who could forget that marigold yellow gaming laptop sitting around Samsung's booth at CES? Though the Series 7 Gamer has been available in Europe since last fall, the company decided to wait until Intel made its big Ivy Bridge reveal to introduce its first gaming laptop here in the states. Now that those chips are starting to ship, the Series 7 Gamer is at last on sale here in the US, available in a single configuration that'll set you back $1,900. (Sorry, folks, it will only be sold in black.) Though that price is slightly higher than the estimate we heard four months ago, the specs are also beefier than we were expecting. For the money, you'll get an unspecified Ivy Bridge Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX675M GPU, a 1.5TB 7,200RPM hard drive and a 400-nit, 17.3-inch, 1080p display. Like that other Series 7 laptop we reviewed recently, that HDD is paired with 8GB of flash memory to help cut start-up and application launch times. At its best, the battery is rated to last 3.7 hours -- not bad for a 13.34-pound system -- and you can exert some control over the runtime by selecting from one of four power modes using an analog dial. All the major e-tailers like Amazon and NewEgg will carry it, and feel free to revisit our hands-on from CES if you need a few close-up shots to jog your memory.

LightSquared founder Philip Falcone to step down 'eventually', attempts to dodge the bankruptcy bullet

In an effort keep the troubled LightSquared from the brink of defaulting on its debt, its founder will step down from the company. While it doesn't look immediate, (people "familiar with the negotiations" are using the word "eventually") it's Philip Falcone's latest attempt to extend a debt-term violation that expires this morning. According to the same sources, if the initial extension is okayed, Falcone and LightSquared's lenders are aiming for a greater period of around 18 months to repay $1.6 billion in loans and pass the FCC's requirements for its network. The company's board is still deliberating on whether to accept the deal, which would stop the company filing for bankruptcy protection. Unfortunately, it looks like those new 4G network dreams just got hazier.

RENTAL HOUSE DEMAND SOARS IN THE SHIRE | Newton Real ...

A HOUSING under-supply in The Shire is driving rental demand skyward as agents struggle to cater to a swell of leasing enquiries.

Lifestyle and convenience are the driving factors as an increasing number of people seek permanent accommodation across The Shire.

According to leading agency Newton Real Estate, houses in the $600 to $900 per week bracket are in the highest demand.

Principal David Newton, said with demand exceeding supply, the market for established homes and rental accommodation is under pressure.

?With regards to any houses up to $750 per week, they will walk out the door,? he said.

?While a surge in unit enquiries has abated, houses close to amenities are in hot demand. Our rental department cannot keep up with the enquiries. The Shire has so much to offer and people are either returning after living in investment properties out west or discovering the place for the first time and not wanting to leave.

?Most of our new tenants are from within The Shire and upgrading their standard of accommodation, while a growing trend is also coming from the St George area.

?The Shire presents a great opportunity for astute investors to reap the rewards of a strong rental market.?

David Newton said new tenants are prepared to pay upwards of $70 per week extra for a pet, as landlords continue to reap the benefits.

?We are not surprised as The Shire delivers all the best Sydney has to offer; famous beaches, iconic waterways, rich bushland and memorable experiences,? he said.

While unit rents have dropped by 5 per cent on average, rental returns on houses remain solid.

Figures from RP Data-Rismark Home Value index showSydneyrents increased 6.8 per cent for houses and 5.1 per cent for units last calendar year, one of the highest rates of rental growth across the capital cities.

A housing under-supply across NSW is playing a crucial role inSydney?s housing market buoyancy. According to the Federal Government?s National Housing Supply Council, NSW accounts for about 40 per cent of the national housing under-supply. It is estimated NSW needs 73,700 additional dwellings to satisfy housing demand.

According to the Urban Taskforce,Sydney?s undersupply of housing is forecast to double to 80,000 by 2014.

While the population of NSW has grown consistently over the past decade, the rate of new homes being built has failed to keep pace.

Based on population and demographic projections prepared by the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics), the Housing Industry of Australia (HIA) estimates that NSW will be home to an additional 412,300 households by 2020.

David Newton said the market in The Sutherland Shire, just 25km south of the CBD and only 20 minutes fromSydneyAirport, is buoyed by strong international migration and reduced net interstate outflows.

?Underlying housing demand is running well ahead of new supply and this gap is expected to widen in the years ahead. As a result we will continue to see strong rental yields and short supply in the medium to long term,? he said.
